Transfer UK Pension to Dubai

What you need to know before transferring your UK pension

If you are living in Dubai and you have a UK pension, the question of whether to transfer it will almost certainly arise. The answer is rarely straightforward and almost always matters more than people expect.

IFA Private Office provides independent guidance on UK pension transfers for British expats in Dubai. We have no commission interest in the outcome. Our advice reflects your situation.

The three questions to answer before any pension transfer decision

Question one: Do you actually need to transfer? For the majority of British expats in Dubai, the answer is no. UK pensions can remain in the UK while you live abroad. They retain their protections, continue to grow, and can be accessed from age 55 (rising to 57 in 2028) regardless of where you are based. The case for transferring needs to be stronger than the case for staying.

Question two: If you transfer, where should the pension go? The two main options are a SIPP (Self-Invested Personal Pension, which keeps the pension within the UK regime) and a QROPS (Qualifying Overseas Pension Scheme, which moves it outside the UK regime). The right answer depends on whether you intend to return to the UK, your age, the nature of your existing scheme, and your tax position in both jurisdictions.

Question three: Who is advising you and why? This is the most important question. Most pension transfer recommendations received by British expats in Dubai come from advisers who are paid by the products they recommend. The size of that commission can run to tens of thousands of pounds. That conflict of interest is structural. It does not mean the advice is always wrong, but it does mean it should be independently verified.

Defined benefit pension transfers

If your UK pension is a defined benefit or final salary scheme, the stakes are higher. These are among the most valuable financial assets most people hold. A guaranteed, inflation-linked income for life. UK regulation requires that any transfer from a defined benefit scheme worth £30,000 or more must be advised by a UK-authorised pension transfer specialist. The default regulatory position is to leave the scheme intact.

Transfers can be appropriate. But the bar is high, the regulatory framework reflects that, and the decision should never be made on the basis of a commission-driven recommendation.

The April 2027 factor

From April 2027 unspent pension wealth will be subject to UK inheritance tax for UK domiciled individuals. For many British expats in Dubai, this change makes the pension transfer question more urgent and more complex. It also makes early planning significantly more valuable than late planning.
