SIPP vs QROPS UAE
SIPP or QROPS: the question every British expat in the UAE faces
If you have a UK pension and you are living in the UAE, you will at some point face the SIPP versus QROPS question. The answer depends entirely on your situation. It does not depend on what pays the adviser more.
This article explains the practical difference between the two options for British expats in the UAE without commission bias.
What is a SIPP
A Self-Invested Personal Pension is a UK pension wrapper. It keeps your retirement savings within the UK regulatory regime. It offers greater investment flexibility than many workplace pensions. It is accessible from age 55 (rising to 57 from 2028). It retains UK pension protections including access to the Pension Protection Fund. Death benefits within a SIPP can be passed to beneficiaries free of inheritance tax, though this changes under the April 2027 rules.
A SIPP is generally appropriate when you want greater investment control, when consolidating multiple small UK pensions makes sense, and when you intend to return to the UK and access your pension there.
What is a QROPS
A Qualifying Overseas Pension Scheme is a pension structure outside the UK regime. It is designed for individuals who are permanently emigrating and have no intention of returning to the UK. It can offer advantages in specific circumstances including certain tax treatments in the country of residence and flexibility around death benefits for non-UK beneficiaries.
A QROPS is often recommended in the UAE because the commission available to the adviser is substantial. That commission comes from the product charges embedded in the structure, which are passed back to the client over time.
The key questions that determine which is right
Do you intend to return to the UK? If yes, a SIPP is almost always more appropriate than a QROPS. Returning to the UK with a QROPS can trigger tax charges and complications that a SIPP avoids entirely.
What are the total charges in the proposed structure? QROPS products sold in the UAE typically carry initial adviser charges, product charges, and annual management fees that together can significantly erode returns over a ten or twenty year period. A SIPP generally has lower total costs.
What happens to your pension on death? Under current rules, pensions outside the estate can be passed to beneficiaries free of inheritance tax. From April 2027 this changes. The death benefit analysis needs to account for the new rules.
