UK Pension Transfer UAE

Before you transfer your UK pension, read this

If you are a British expat living in the UAE and you have been approached about transferring your UK pension, this article is for you.

Pension transfer recommendations in the UAE financial advisory market are in most cases driven by commission. The adviser who recommends you transfer your pension stands to earn a significant sum from that recommendation. That is not a reason to refuse all advice. It is a reason to seek independent verification before making a decision that cannot easily be undone.

The default position

The starting point for any pension transfer analysis should be: what is the case for not transferring? Your UK pension has protections that offshore structures do not replicate. It carries death benefits that may be more valuable than the alternatives being offered. It is governed by UK regulation with access to the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Pension Protection Fund in the event of scheme failure. None of these apply to most offshore QROPS structures.

The case for transfer needs to be stronger than the case for staying. In most situations, it is not.

The main transfer options

SIPP. A Self-Invested Personal Pension keeps the pension within the UK regime. It can offer greater investment flexibility than a workplace scheme. It is appropriate in specific circumstances. The charges are generally lower than comparable QROPS structures.

QROPS. A Qualifying Overseas Pension Scheme moves the pension outside the UK regime. It can be appropriate for expats who do not intend to return to the UK. It is frequently recommended inappropriately by commission-driven advisers in the UAE. The charges embedded in many UAE-sold QROPS products are significant.

Leave it in the UK. For most British expats in the UAE, this remains the right default position. The pension continues to exist, retains its protections, and can be accessed from age 55 regardless of where you live.

The April 2027 dimension

From April 2027 unspent pension wealth will be included in estates for UK inheritance tax purposes. This changes the analysis for many British expats in the UAE. Understanding how the new rules interact with your existing pension, and whether any structural change serves your interests, requires up-to-date advice from someone who has no commission interest in the answer.
